Changes to business waste management

Changes to business waste management

The government has introduced a new set of regulations called ‘Simpler Recycling’ to encourage business recycling.

These new requirements affect the way businesses and non-household premises choose to handle and get rid of their waste.

What this means for your business

Starting 31 March 2025, businesses with 10 or more full-time employees must separate their recycling and food waste from general waste.

This means businesses and non-household premises must have separate collections for:

  • recycling waste like paper, glass bottles or cartons
  • food waste like eggs, fruits or vegetables

They must also use licensed waste carriers to get rid of these waste types.

These new requirements also apply to non-household premises like schools, charities, community hubs, places of worship, or hospitals.

Smaller businesses with fewer than 10 full time employees are also expected to comply with this new legislation by 31 March 2027.
